Activities

To work towards its aims, the Observatory undertakes, in the coming years:

1: To continue to organise, with the support of the national observatories and local scientific laboratories, international conferences on violence in the school environment. Only the Board of Directors of the International Observatory may grant the right to use the name “International Conference on Violence in Schools and Public Policy”, the said right being assigned to it by the European Observatory.

2: Publish an on-line specialised revue, with a scientific reading committee working on the principle of double blind assessment of articles.

3: To prepare, by the time of the 2007 Conference, a first “Report on Violence in Schools around the World”. This work will then be up-dated every two years on the occasion of the International Conferences. It will be published either on-line or as a book, the Executive Committee being responsible for looking for a potential publisher. A different co-ordination team will be responsible for each new edition, which must receive the prior approval of the Board of Directors.

4: To award, on the occasion of each International Conference, a “Thesis Prize” for the best work on the issue of violence in schools.

5: To take position on the public declarations, policies and programmes brought to its attention by the members of the NGO. In particular, the INTERNATIONAL OBSERVATORY OF VIOLENCE IN THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT will seek to ensure that this problem is not exploited in a sensationalist manner that exaggerates its importance (for political, media or career reasons) and that its existence is not denied in an excessively angelic view of life in schools.

6: To prepare an overview of efficient, ineffective or promising action that has been taken, on the basis of the available literature, and to envisage possible adaptations on the international level.
